24-Hour Laundromats: How They Work and What to Expect at 3am

Washatería Lavandería operates three 24-hour self-service laundromats in Lewisville, Carrollton and North Dallas, TX. This is what we know from running them.

What to Expect at a 24-Hour Laundromat at 3am

A quick walkthrough for a late-night self-service visit

  • Park in a well-lit space near the entrance and bring your laundry in.
  • Load a machine, choose your cycle, and start it at the kiosk with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, the app, or cash.
  • Most washes run 30–40 minutes; a typical dry is 20–30 minutes.
  • Stay with your load or set a timer and return before the cycle ends — unattended laundry is not secured storage.
  • Quietest hours are 10pm–6am, so late-night visits usually mean open machines and less waiting.

Why Are Most Laundromats Not Open 24/7?

Staffing, insurance, cash-box theft — and how cashless kiosks changed the economics

Most laundromats close by 10pm because running an attended store overnight is expensive. Someone has to be paid to staff a shift that often sees very few customers, and labor for those quiet hours can cost more than the revenue the store brings in. Insurance can be another factor: an insurer sees more risk in a store left open all night, especially if there is cash on the premises.

Cash handling is the bigger problem. A traditional coin-operated laundromat has rows of coin boxes full of money, which makes it a target after dark. Leaving those machines running unattended overnight creates a theft risk, so most operators close rather than take the chance. A 24-hour laundromat either has to staff the overnight shift or remove the reasons the store has to close.

Washatería Lavandería is unattended and cashless-first: customers start machines at a kiosk or app with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or cash. There is no open register and no row of coin boxes to break into. Cameras, lighting and remote monitoring cover the store overnight, and early-morning cleaning rounds keep the space maintained. That is how the business can stay open 24 hours, 365 days a year, without adding a full overnight staff for every hour.

Is It Safe to Go to a Laundromat at Night?

What 24/7 safety looks like at our locations

Our locations are well-lit, camera-monitored and designed for unattended use: park in visible spaces, use the kiosk, and start your load. There are no coin boxes to break into, and cleaning rounds happen in the early morning hours.

One Google reviewer, Scott, described the overnight experience directly: “24 hours really means 24 hours. I wash during 2a–5a — real quiet and well maintained during the late night, and the fans are always running to keep you cool. There's a gentleman who comes to clean in the early morning hours; he sweeps, mops, and wipes down machines and tables, all while respecting your space as a customer.”

What Happens If I Leave My Clothes at the Laundromat Overnight?

Please don't — and here's how to avoid it

Unattended laundry is not secured storage. Set a timer and stay with your load or return before the cycle ends. A typical wash is 30–40 minutes and a typical dry is 20–30 minutes, so a full wash-and-dry trip is usually under 90 minutes.

What Is the Least Busy Time at a Laundromat?

Quietest hours and the busiest window

At our DFW locations, the quietest hours are 10pm–6am and weekday mornings. Sunday from about 12pm–5pm tends to be the busiest window. If you want machines to yourself, the late-night hours are the most open.

Unspoken Laundromat Etiquette

The rules regulars already follow

  • Don't abandon a finished load in a machine.
  • Don't open or move someone else's laundry.
  • Clean the lint trap or wipe down the machine if you made a mess.
  • Use headphones for phone calls and videos.
  • Keep the folding tables clear when you're not folding.

Can You Get Bed Bugs at a Laundromat?

What our cleaning and hot-dry protocol does

Bed bugs are a concern for any shared laundry space, but the risk is low when machines and folding areas are cleaned regularly. Our locations are cleaned daily, and dryers reach temperatures high enough to kill bed bugs when clothes are dried on a full hot cycle. Do not leave laundry sitting in bags overnight, and inspect bulky bedding before you bring it in.

What It Costs to Use a 24-Hour Laundromat at Any Hour
